Laura Ingalls Wilder (often referred to as "Half Pint") is the second daughter of Caroline and Charles Ingalls. When she was young, Laura most of the time was the tomboy of the Ingalls family; preferring to go fishing or play baseball instead of doing more ladylike activities. After moving to Walnut Grove, Laura soon met Nellie Oleson and the two became rivals throughout most of their childhoods. They did make amends when the two were older though.

Laura was a big fan of animals, and had many pets. One of her first pets was Jack, who was her companion for many years. She also had a horse, Bunny, who she sold to the Olesons' in order to buy Caroline a stove for Christmas. Laura did managed to get Bunny back, but Bunny's life was cut short when she fell over a wired fence; ultimately leading to Bunny having to be put out of pain. Jack passed away as well, in the Ingalls' barn and was buried on a hill in Plum Creek. Her next dog was Bandit, who she had throughout the remainder of her teenage years.

Isaiah Edwards (also known as "Mr. Edwards") is a mountain man who first met the Ingalls family while they were living on the open prairies of Kansas. He helped them build their house and taught Laura, whom he always had a special bond with, how to spit, much to the displeasure of Caroline. When they had to leave Kansas, they gave Isaiah their livestock that they couldn't take with them to Plum Creek, Walnut Grove.

Once they were settled in Walnut Grove, Charles was picking up some merchandise for Nels Oleson when he found Isaiah drunk in a saloon. After convincing him to come to Walnut Grove, Isaiah stayed with them for a little while but eventually got his place there. During this time, he met Grace Snider, who he would later marry. Prior to meeting Grace and the Ingalls, a disease killed both his wife and daughter, he later told this to Caroline.

This led him to become an alcoholic, an addiction that would haunt him several times throughout his life.

Right after marrying Grace, the two adopted John Jr., Alicia, and Carl Sanderson, the three children of Julia Sanderson. The five shared many happy and tragic times. The Edwards family once moved to gold country with the Ingalls, but left after watching the neighboring families be destroyed by greed.

The Edwards family left Walnut Grove after gold country, and Isaiah later owned a wealthy logging empire. One day, when Alicia brought him lunch, she was nearly crushed by a falling log; Isaiah saved her but his legs were crushed.

He soon gave up on life, and Grace wrote the Ingalls for help. Charles and Laura came to visit him, but still didn't bring him out of his depression: Charles had to save him for suicide on two separate occasions. In order to snap him out of it, Charles pretended to have a injury from a gun accident and Isaiah has to go for help.

Soon after this, Mr. Edwards was back to his normal self.
