Ketty Lester (b. August 16, 1934) is an Arkansas born singer and actress, who played Hester-Sue Terhune on Little House on the Prairie, appearing in a total of 40 episodes on the series, beginning with the Season 5 two-part episode story "Blind Journey (Part 1)" and "Blind Journey (Part 2)" (episodes #12 and #13). An American singer and actress, Ketty is, in addition to her acting career, also known for her 1962 hit single "Love Letters", which reached the top 5 of the pop music charts in the U.S. and the U.K.
Life and career[]
Born Revoyda Frierson on August 16, 1934 in Hope, Arkansas, [1] Ketty's parents were farmers who eventually would have 15 children in all. As a young child, Lester first sang in her church, and later in school choirs.
Ketty won a scholarship to study music at San Francisco State College, and in the early 1950s, she began performing under the name "Ketty Lester" in the city's Purple Onion club. She later toured Europe as a singer with Cab Calloway's orchestra After a brief stint in an off-Broadway production, Cabin in the Sky, she was signed to Era Records which released "Love Letters." The song became a big seller in both the United Kingdom and the United States, and reached number #2 on the Billboard R&B chart.
In addition to her role as Hester-Sue Terhune on LHOP, she made her first episode appeaance on the series playing the part of Janie Kagan, the wife of Joe Kagan in the Season 4 episode "The Fighter" (episode #10).
Other television roles for Lester include the role of Helen Grant in the soap opera, Days of Our Lives, and Aunt Lucy in the film House Party 3. She also did voice-overs for the animated cartoon series, G.I. Joe. Her birth name was Revoyda Frierson. She was featured in the film Battered as a minor role (Helen).
