Ebenezer Sprague was the son of a farmer, and quit school in the third grade. He saw a city for the first time at age 17. He did not like the city. He was an adept fisherman, and knew a great deal about fishing, although the books he read seemed to be of no use. He there befriended Laura Ingalls, who helped him change his cold heart. When Laura and her friend Jonah believed they found gold in Plum Creek, they took it to him to have it weighed and he had to break the unfortunate news to her that it was Pyrite and not gold. (Episode 210: At the End of the Rainbow) He remained in Walnut Grove for about another year until harsh economic conditions caused him to move out. (Episode 316: To Live With Fear (Part 1)
