Bandit was Laura Ingalls' second dog. Originally he was a stray, and Charles noticed him trying to steal food. While on the way home to Walnut Grove, Bandit jumped on Charles' rig and became a member of the Ingalls family.

At first Laura disliked Bandit, she missed her old dog Jack and didn't want a new dog as replacement, Bandit liked Laura and would often try to play with her, but she would try to ignore him, Laura's anger boiled when she saw Bandit with Jack's old toy, Laura unleashed her anger on Bandit, but later she was sorry for her actions and Laura grew very close to Bandit and yet she never forgot her old dog Jack.
